Examination of Toolmarks Produced by Files

This article examines the possibility of identifying toolmarks made by filing. Toolmarks made by the same file were compared in an attempt to reach an identification. This experiment showed that it is possible to identify toolmarks made by filing. However, only the filed toolmarks produced under very controlled circumstances exhibited sufficient individual characteristics for identification.
