AFTE Store - Using Class Characteristics to Distinguish Between Cartridge Cases Fired by Glock, Smith & Wesson Sigma, and Springfield XD Pistols

Glock, Smith & Wesson, and Springfield Armory have, over the years, manufactured many different model polymer frame pistols. Some of the manufacturing techniques implemented in making these pistols are similar and give rise to similar class characteristics. These similarities can prove difficult for firearms examiners when providing investigators with a list of possible weapons. In this study, class characteristics are compared on the test fired cartridge cases from all three manufacturers in order to identify the differences that might aid the firearms examiner.
