This brief presentation will provide an introduction to the AAFS Academy Standards Board and the Firearms and Toolmarks Consensus Body to those not yet aware of our function and include a brief update on recent activities such as the publication of new standards, request for interpretation on prior publications, and some of the working groups and relevant topics being discussed currently by the membership.
The presenter will entertain questions on the process, accept feedback on those who’ve submitted comments or interacted with the process, and encourage anyone with interest to sit in on future open meetings and consider taking an active role by commenting at those meetings and/or offering to join the consensus body and/or individual working groups.
Recent standards to be touched upon will include:
096 Standard Method for the Examination and Documentation of Ammunition and Ammunition Components
105 Minimum Education Requirements for Firearm and Toolmark Examiner Trainees
107 Best Practice Recommendation for Measuring Trigger Pull of a Firearm and Estimating Its Uncertainty
Also discussed with be information on the new NIST-AAFS cooperative agreement for training resources. The goal is to promote implementation of OSAC Registry standards and this effort will provide training, tools and resources to AFTE members at no cost.
The AAFS Standards Board (ASB) is an ANSI-accredited Standards Developing Organization with the purpose of providing accessible, high quality science-based consensus forensic standards. The ASB is a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), established and accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 2015. The ASB consists of Consensus Bodies (CB), which are open to all materially interested and affected individuals, companies, and organizations; a Board; and Staff.
