Prior studies have evaluated the use of infrared images for cartridge case identification based on breech face, shearing, and striated marks. A current NIJ sponsored study at SED Technology extends the investigation to consider firing pin impressions as3D models from infrared images. One objective is to test the hypothesis that firing pin impressions produced by a specific firm, as recorded by infrared cameras, remain essentially unchanged through one through successive firings. The ultimate goal is to produce more reliable and accurate automated identification of candidate matches through infrared imaging as an adjunct to, or replacement for, visible light imaging.
