As part of a death investigation and arson, two discharged cartridge cases and a semiautomatic rifle were submitted to the laboratory for examination.  During the examination, it became obvious that the evidence cartridge cases had not been discharged normally in the rifle.  could the rifle have been heated by the the fire to discharge of cook off the ammunition?  Could cooked off cartridge cases be identified to the rifle?  Test were conducted to determine if a rifle would discharge and still continue to function if heated by an external source of heat.
