Development of a 3D-Topography Imaging and Analysis System for Firearm Identification using GelSight and Feature-Based Case Matching

2013

Ryan Lilien & Todd Weller

Albuquerque, NM

This presentation deals with the overall goal of the project, which is the development of an accurate and low cost system for structural 3D imaging and comparison of cartridge cases. The GelSight imaging system and its 3D imaging technology and structural analysis algorithms show promising early results. Details of an initial case matching experiment using three consecutively manufactured Ruger P-series breechfaces, and a larger experiment involving replicate fires from twenty 9mm Luger caliber pistols representing numerous manufactures, will be covered in this presentation. In an all vs. all comparison, the GelSight imaging system, was able to correctly match cartridge cases fired in the same firearm.
