Prior studies have evaluated the use of infrared images for cartridge case identification based on breechface, shearing, and striated marks. A current NIJ-sponsored study at SED Technology integrates IR images of firing pin impressions and 3D models of spent cartridge cases used for comparison analysis. Comparison of bullets from 3D/IR models is also a part of the current study. The ultimate goal is to produce more reliable and accurate automated identification of candidate matches through infrared imaging as an adjunct to, or replacement for, visible light imaging. Improvnig the automated selection of candidate matches could significantly reduce the number of false positive candidates presented to examiners for their conclusive identification.
