Glock Barrel Modifications: A Feasible Method to Facilitate the Identification of Fired Bullets?

2009

Ashley Northcutt

Miami, FL

This research examined feasibility of shooting valve-grinding compound down a barrel in order to make barrels more identifiable. Permatex valve grinding compound was shot through three Glock pistols and it was found to add reproducible individual characteristics to the fired bullets. The modifications did not appear to affect accuracy, muzzle velocity, or barrel life. However, comparisons between pre- and post- modification would be more difficult. This presentation also included a short summary of Glock barrel manufacturing.
