The main objective of this research was to develop a new 3D sensor technology that overcomes some of the challenges with IBIS Brasstrax, such as backward compatibility with 2D images and the ineffectiveness of the technologies for capturing cartridge case surfaces relative to bullet surfaces. The new sensor must provide the required sensitivity and resolution, with accurate 3D visualization of markings and superior correlation performance. A prototype using stereo photometry led to several key developments, which resulted in a significant improvement of correlation performance compared to 2D, approaching the 90% level of first position for known matches.
