In March of 2009, for the first time in Europe, the workshop Scientifically Defensible criteria for the Identification of Striated Toolmarks, instructed by Bruce Moran and John Murdock was conducted. Besides a thorough and up to date review of the existing literature on the subject of Firearms and Toolmark Identification, students were to examine, evaluate and tabulate Consecutive Matching Striae (CMS) throughout different exercises. This presentation will look into the validity of the CMS criteria, the dispersion of line counts as performed by individual student and the correlation between identifying matching lines and the examiner’s experience.
