Broach Rifling

As barrel manufacturing techniques improved, the cut rifling method was replaced with broach rifling. The broach is made up of a single cutting edge or a series of individual cutting edges. Each cutting edge is called a “button.” Like cut rifling, all trace of annular rings are removed in the groove but left on top of the land. A bore broach may be used to give the same type of finish on the top of the lands as the groove broach gives to the groove.
