Bullet Wipe

The discolored area on the immediate periphery of a bullet hole, caused by the transfer of residues from the bearing surface of the bullet. These dark gray to black residues typically contain carbon, lead, bullet material, and possibly other constituents such as bullet lubricant and primer residues. Bullet wipe may occur at any range of fire. Also known as burnishing or leaded edge, gray collar, gray rim, or gray ring.
