From the early 1920’s forward, several United States manufactures produced dual-purpose tear gas truncheons that were able to be used both as a bludgeoning instrument, and as a firearm designed to discharge tear gas shotshells. Although these truncheons were not designed to fire standard shotshells, they are capable of discharging modern shotshell ammunition. Tear gas truncheons present a distinct danger to law enforcement personnel since they are not readily identifiable as a firearm, and can inflict lethal force.
