AFTE Store - A Comparison of Pellet Patterns for Standard and Tactical 00 Buckshot Loads

This article reviews the construction and pellet pattern characteristics of several common 00 buckshot game loads and compares them to two tactical loads used primarily by law enforcement agencies. The simple removal of 1 pellet from the typical 9 pellet 00 buckshot load, combined with a thick-walled shot cup, has drastically altered the predicted pellet spread that is obtained. A comparison of pellet patterns at 5, 10 and 15 yards is presented for traditional pellet configurations as well as the relatively newer Federal Tactical 8 pellet load. Some additional forensic aspects of shot shell components are examined.
