AFTE Store - Automatic Comparison of Firing Pin Marks Against Descriptors Independent of Image Orientation

A mathematical method for comparing images of firing pin marks to arbitrarily-shaped spots in a grayscale representation is considered. An algorithm based on the consecutive application of the potential function and the contour analysis methods is proposed. The final results of the comparison algorithm do not depend on image orientation. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been supported through an array of 120 digital images of similar marks.
