AFTE Store - Basic Function Tests of Electronic Control Devices (TASER) for Firearms Examiners
Since the authors started examining TASERs in 2001, many inquiries have been made regarding the best means of determining if an Electronic Control Device (ECD), or TASER is functioning properly. During the examinations of hundreds of TASERs over the years, characteristics have been discovered that are not necessarily known or disseminated by the manufacturer. The examination may become more complicated than simply downloading the internal firing data. It is important for an examiner asked to perform a function check to understand traits and errors related to the firing data, batteries, firmware, etc. In the post incident analysis, it may necessary to determine the power output of the device with costly and complicated testing, but if a TASER model X26 exhibits a clean consistent spark for ten continuous seconds, the device is likely performing within manufacturer’s specifications.
