AFTE Store - Cartridge Caliber Conversions

Cartridge cases can be converted into different calibers by using specialized case forming dies. Although hundreds of different cartridge conversions have been developed over the years, several conversions of commonly available cartridge brass into less available calibers can be accomplished by merely running the brass through the reloading die of the desired caliber. This allows the handloaders the opportunity to use easy-to-obtain, inexpensive brass as a source of new cartridges in the less available calibers without the additional expense of forming dies or the need to learn specialized conversion techniques. This paper descibes an actual case in which a 30-06 Springfield cartridge was reloaded as a 270 Winchester cartridge and used in a homicide. Addtionally, these common one-step conversions are tabulated for easy reference.
