AFTE Store - Criteria For Identification Of Toolmarks

The theory of identification as it pertains to tool marks is reviewed, and the falsifiability of the hypothesis as stated in the AFTE Glossary, and criteria for and identification are examined. Known non-matches of two and three dimensional too marks are examined for random matching striae. The degree of consecutiveness of random matching stria was recorded. These results are compared with the results of similar comparisons of known matches. A computer is used to compare two million land impressions on bullets known to have been fired from different firearms. The probability of finding consecutive striae in known non-matches is then examined.
