Single action revolvers can be discharged if a sufficient blow is delivered to the back of the hammer with the hammer fully forward and the firing pin in direct contact with a live cartridge. Careful examination of breechface markings and the measurement of the firing pin impression depth in either centerfire or rimfire cartridges can reveal whether the cartridge was fired as a result of a blow to the hammer or fired in the normal manner after which hammer experienced an impact.
