AFTE Store - Firearm/Toolmark Examination and the Daubert Criteria

The purpose of this paper is to familiarize the forensic firearm/tool mark examiner with the Daubert decision and its repercussions in the modern courtroom. This review will also confirm that the field of firearm and tool mark identification satisfies the criteria established by Daubert for expert testimony. The information contained herein is intended to strengthen an examiner’s testimony and additional, agency-specific material may be added by an expert witness concerning the peer review, error rate, and controls and standards policies utilized by his or her department.
