Certification efforts in the forensic sciences have caused practitioners to carefully scrutinize the concepts and rationales that form the basis for the several disciplines which collectively are referred to as the forensic sciences. This scrutiny has often resulted in a clear enunciation of the scope of required knowledge and the underlying principles upon which it is based. We take this opportunity, therefore, of presenting our concepts of the fundamental principals that justify the existence of Firearms and Toolmark Identification as a separate discipline.
