This paper is an analysis of firearms safety design mechanisms. The various safety designs have been classified into fourteen different categories. (Automatic Safety, Firing Pin Block, Hammer Block, Sear Block, Striker block, Striker Retainer/Block, Trigger Block, Disconnector Safety, Inertia Firing Pin, Grip Safety, Magazine Safety, Rebounding Hammer, Rebounding Striker, Safety Notch and Transfer Bar.) The origin of each of the safety categories has been researched and determined. Eachc category has examples of actual production firearms. This analysis also reviews the present “State of the Art” for each of the safety design categories.
