AFTE Store - Firing Distance Estimation From Bullet Impact Characteristics On Thin Sheets Metal
A number of articles have previously been published regarding the estimation of a shooter’s position. The majority of these
papers were based on experiments performed in the laboratory. This paper provides a different perspective for distance
estimation based on physical measurements or morphology of the bullet hole created as a result of the bullet passing
through a target. One of these characteristics is known as the “crown” phenomenon that is caused by the peeling away of
the bullet jacket after penetrating the target. The “crown” dimensions can be examined and measured in the field, in order
to help investigators estimate a shooter›s distance.
