Firing of a Springfield Model XD-40 without a Guide Rod

A Springfield Armory Model XD-40 pistol was submitted to the lab with a recoil spring with no guide rod in place of the captive recoil spring assembly manufactured in this model of pistol. The question: Would this firearm safely feed, fire, and function as submitted? Testing showed that the Springfield Model XD-40 will indeed feed, fire, and function safely with a recoil spring and no guide rod.
