AFTE Store - Gunpowder/Gunshot Residue Deposition: Barrel Length vs. Powder Type

This paper examines the effect of barrel length and powder type on gunshot residue deposition involving 22 rimfire ammunition. The presence or absence of three types of gunshot residue (sooting, non-visible sooting, and gunpowder) were noted at various distances. The approximate distances at which some of these residues could be “expected” to be present/absent are listed. Some of the problems involved in gunshot residue determination are also listed as well as a summary of results.
