AFTE Store - IBIS CORRELATION RESULTS – IMPROVEMENTS

IBIS, Integrated Ballistics Identification System, provides many ways to speed up comparison and operator analysis of fired cartridges. This report will recommend and demonstrate by case study two methods to improve the chances of a “hit” (potential match) and two methods to reduce the operator analysis time of the correlation results. The first method requires evaluating the top five correlation results regardless of the correlation score differential. The results of forty correlations showed a marked improvement of approximately 35% of success. The second method requires inputting two cartridge cases, instead of one. Ten case studies showed no missed “hits”, 100% success. The first method to reduce operator analysis time is to rearrange the correlation ranks using mathematical intersection and union functions. Ten case studies showed that 60% of the cases (that contain a hit), the hit was moved into position number one, reducing the SAS (Signature Analysis Station) operator analysis time considerably. The second method rearranges the “failed intersection and union list” using neural networks, resulting in reduced SAS operator analysis time, in all cases.
