AFTE Store - Individual Apearing Toolmarks on Unfired Primers of Turan Ammo

Toolmarks visually observed on the primers of eighteen unfired 9mm Luger caliber Turan cartridges were separated into six groups, each attributed to different tools. The observed markings bear resemblance to individual characteristics consisting of fine linear and angled striae on the face of the primers. Without further sample sets to determine the origin of the markings, it is hypothesized that these marks are generated from the primer seating process of manufacturing and could be individual; however, more study is needed to confirm the origination of the markings, their persistence, and value for comparison purposes. It is another reminder for examiners to be mindful of the presence of these characteristics on components resultant of the manufacturing process, and to not utilize them for firearm source attribution. It is also unclear how much, if any, of the observed fine striae would carry over after the cartridges have been fired in a firearm.
