California Law AB1471 effective January 1, 2010 prohibits the sale of any newly-designed semi-automatic pistol as an unsafe handgun, unless the pistol is equipped with two or more internal parts having micro-stamping that identify the make, model and serial number of the pistol. About eight states after California have introduced bills or are in the process of it. New York is still in the introductory stage. Micro-stamping individual characteristics in firearms may not impress legible characters on all discharged cartridge casings as intended, but may enhance microscopic examination for firearms identification.
