Much information is available from the study of gunshot wounds; the identification of wounds as entrance or exit wounds is just one such piece of information. Many of the characteristics of entrance and exit wounds are also important in determining range of fire, relative direction of fire, number of wounds, nature of the weapon and ammunition, and instantaneousness of death. Taking these and other factors into consideration may help to characterize the wounds as being homicidal, suicidal, or accidental.
