Modern serial numbers can have up to 10 digits. A restoration attempt which falls to disclose two or more characters can be ruinous to a criminal investigation. What follows is a new procedure, partially discussed in annecdotal form, which draws from published NASA research and experiences of the author in metalcraft and serial number restorations. Tools, phrases, and terms from a comprehensive 1978 NASA study are credited above by the appearance of an asterick.
