A number of shotshell manufacturers now disperse their shot (particularly larger shot such as buckshot) in a matrix of granualr polyethylene. The purpose of the polyethylene is to serve as a shot cushion to prevent the sudden impulse of firing from defforming the shot and resulting in a lack of stability in flight.
