AFTE Store - Recovering Toolmarks Using Alternative Field Expedient Techniques
This paper describes an unusual examination of two semi-automatic pistols and fired ballistic material. The examination
was influenced by restrictive circumstances which resulted in the use of very limited equipment and basic field expedient
techniques. This essentially involved capturing firing markings using silicone rubber and soft metal sheet as an alternative
to test firing.
The results of this examination ultimately focus on the success of casting sufficient alternative firing mark impressions in
order to perform a microscopic comparison. This comparison would, in the absence of genuine test fired samples, conclusively
confirm the use of a recovered murder weapon.
