AFTE Store - Serial Number Restoration with Image Enhancement on the FBI Drugfire Computer

It was hypothesized that by capturing images of firearms during the serial number restoration process onto the FBI Drugfire computer using a video camera, the image enhancement capabilities of the computer would allow better dicernment of partially or fully-restored serial numbers. The serial numbers on seven guns were obliterated by different methods. Throughout the restoration process, images of the guns were captured onto the Drugfire computer with varying sources of light. The best type of illumination was found to be a diffused light source bounced off the table near the firearm. After multiple trials, it was found that the applications on the Drugfire computer allow limited image enhancement. Due to the amount of time required for this proces, this technique would only be recommended for use on difficult cases in which certain areas need to be examined in great detail.
