AFTE Store - Specific Impact Characteristics Caused by Bullet Manufacturing Designs

A firearm, JHP ammunition, and a heavy padlock with what appeared to be a bullet strike on one side were submitted to the laboratory. A request was made to determine if any relationship existed between the padlock, the ammunition, and the firearm. Upon close examination, the padlock had a hole that was centered at the base of the bullet strike. Testing confirmed that certain specific hollow point bullets leave a hole or small round impression in the bullet defect when fired into a padlock or similar material.
