The author documents the test firing procedure he typically employs for acquiring reference standards from a firearm. It is his practice to fire similar ammunition when it is available in the laboratory, to fire a minimum of three rounds (with four or five as a routine for .22 caliber firearms), and to use a phase mark to index the bullets prior to test firing. These suggestions will save time and will help the examiner during the comparison process.
