AFTE Store - The Accuracy and Precision of Trajectory Measurements

Trajectory measurements are often an integral part of shooting reconstruction. This paper not only serves to review proper techniques and procedures of trajectory measurement, but also provides the Forensic Scientist and/or Scene Investigator with some useful data regarding the accuracy and precision of these types of measures. For the majority of trajectory back extrapolations, plus or minus 5 degrees is an appropriate variance level. Depending on the material struck, the angle of incidence, and the velocity of the projectile, a lesser or greater amount of variance may be appropriate. A significant advancement in trajectory representation is 3D laser scanning. A validation of the technology and its use as a trajectory tool shows that it is as accurate as existing methods.
