AFTE Store - The Collection of Gunshot Discharge Residues

Gunshot Residue (GSR) includes powder, primer and metals occuring upon discharging a firearm. The residue results from gases or particles leaving the barrel and other openings in the weapon. The actual amount of residue on the hands, clothing, or other sking surfaces, varies with the types of weapon and ammunition used. Gunshot residues have been reported on a live subject’s hands several hours after firing but, in practice, not much can be expected after about four houors. In suicides, residue analysis can last many hours after the time of shooting. In either case, correct sample collection techniques are critical.
