AFTE Store - The Effects of Gun Cleaning Solvents and Lubricants on the Performance of Ammunition

The failure of a firearm to discharge can be the difference in a life or death situation. A study was conducted to determine the effect that various gun cleaning solvents and lubricants have on ammunition viability. Ammunition was obtained that had a sealant placed on both the primer and case mouth. A wide variety of gun cleaning solvents and lubricants were sprayed or poured onto the ammunition. During a forty day time period, cartridges were collected from the gun cleaning solvents or lubricants, visually and microscopically examined and test-fired through a chronograph. The data collected was examined and calculations were performed. The conclusion is that the contact of gun cleaning solvents and lubricants on ammunition may compromise its performance.
