AFTE Store - The Effects of Wind Velocity on Gunshot Powder and Residue

This research study was developed to determine the affect wind or air movement may be playing concerning the patterning of gunshot patterns on clothing in forensic cases. Three types of firearms and three differing types of smokeless powder were utilized in the testing. A large variable speed fan served as a source of wind being directed at the line of fired from varying angles. Comparison between the gunshot patterns on cloth targets allowed a visual interpretation of any variations due to the affects of the wind. The affects of the wind were evident to a slight degree in some of the tests; however, when considering wind variable institution into range determination technique, it was found to be negligible.
