AFTE Store - The History and Evolution of Ignition Systems

The current firearms and ammunition we use today are a far cry from some of the earliest known examples. From the formulation of powder to the method by which the powder is ignited, to the action of the gun, there have been tremendous strides in the development of firearms and the ammunition fired in them. This article attempts to provide the Firearm Examiner with a comprehensive history covering the introduction and evolution of the major types of firearms and cartridges that have been developed. This information could assist Firearm Examiners in the course of casework, should they encounter an odd or unusual cartridge or cartridge case.
