During a firearm examiner+s training to estimate muzzle-to-target distances for clothing, it is usually emphasized that the type of material used to conduct known distance shots should be as similar as possible to the type of material found in the item of evidence. This case study serves to add further support for this rule and exemplifies how the condition and/or age of the clothing can influence the results of distance determination comparisons.
