AFTE Store - The Predictable Behavior of Shotgun Pellets

The behaviour of pellets in flight is examined with a combined experimental – statistical study. The experimental design is unique in the sense that shotshells, loaded with coloured pellets, were shot and the pellets photographed in flight. An analysisof the photographs has indicated that the general pellet behaviour is reproducible and that a thorough statistical analysis can be applied. Using Descriptive statistics (histograms, boxplots) and statistical testing we were able to objectively assess the observations. This feasibility study has shown that the technique of colourisation of pellets within a shotshell with subsequent high speed photography can provide useful and reproducible results to assist in our understanding of the spread of pellets following the discharge of a shotgun.
