AFTE Store - The Validation of Inkjet Photographic Paper for Use with the Modified Griess Test

Validation of an alternative method for muzzle to target firing distance estimation is described. The method involves the substitution of Inkjet photographic paper for the traditional desensitized emulsion-based photographic paper for use in the detection of gun shot residue patterns with the Modified Griess Test. The benefit is relieving the examiner of the time consuming step of desensitizing light sensitive paper by using Inkjet photographic paper, which does not require this step. Various brands of Inkjet photographic paper were compared and evaluated to the standard emulsion-based photographic paper using set distances, the same firearm, and ammunition. The results demonstrate that the Inkjet photographic paper yields comparable, and in some instances, better results than the emulsion-based photographic paper
