Definition

Potential for Subclass Carryover

Face Milling– Milling of a surface perpendicular to the cutter axis.  It is intended for machining a surface parallel to the face of the cutter.

The face milling processes can impart subclass carryover due to the tool marks imparted to the work piece appear as arched tool marks. As in plunge milling, the overall pattern may repeat from work piece to work piece depending on the state of wear of the tool surface.

However, areas of individual characteristics may also be imparted to the work piece during manufacturing due to chip formation, tool wear, or through wear, tear, use, and abuse of the work piece.  These areas would appear as random, non-continuous marks with various starting and stopping points along the surface of the work piece.
